"The Flying Eagle cent designed by James B. Longacre was adopted from a drawing by Titian Peale that was first used on the pattern silver dollars of 1836. Although listed with the rest of the Flying Eagle strikes, the 1856 cent was not an authorized Mint issue, as the laws governing the new small size coin were not enacted until 1857. All Flying Eagle cents were struck in Philadelphia. The small cent was redesigned in 1859 and shows a charming head of Liberty wearing a feathered headdress....

"Nickels of this design, often called " V nickels," were introduced in 1883. The first coins did not have the word CENTS on the back, and some were gold plated and fraudulently passed as $5 gold pieces. Later that year the U.S. Mint added the word CENTS in its present location. All Liberty Head Nickels were struck at the Philadelphia Mint except for part of the coinage of 1912, when some coins were struck in Denver and San Francisco. The mintmarks D and S appear on the reverse, under the...

"James E. Fraser designed this coin, commonly known as the Buffalo Nickel. His initial "F" appears just below the date. The head does not represent any particular Native American, but is a composite of three defferent models. Although commonly referred to as Buffalo nickels, the animal on the reverse is actually a bison, likely modeled after "Black Diamond" in the New York Zoological Gardens. In its orginal form, the bison stands on a raised mound, into which the denomination was set. However,...

"The coin commonly referred to as the Mercury dime was designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, who also created the Liberty Walking half dollar. His initials, in the monogram form, appear above and to the right of the date. The bust on the obverse depicts Liberty wearing a winged cap that symbolizes freedom of thought. But due to popular cultural images, many see the design as that of Mercury, the winged messenger of the Greek gods. Thus, despite the common reference to this as the Mercury...

"In 1883 a new motif, the Liberty Head ( by Charles E. Barber, who had been chief engraver at the Mind since 1880 ), was introduced for the nickel five-cent piece. The obverse featured Miss Liberty facing to the left, with stars surrounding her, and the date below. On the reverse the denomination was simply stated by the Roman numeral V, a tradition following the use of III to designate the value of the nickel three-cent and silver three-cent pieces." - Whitman PublishingDesigner: Charles E....
