"The Flying Eagle cent designed by James B. Longacre was adopted from a drawing by Titian Peale that was first used on the pattern silver dollars of 1836. Although listed with the rest of the Flying Eagle strikes, the 1856 cent was not an authorized Mint issue, as the laws governing the new small size coin were not enacted until 1857.
