"For more than twenty years, the quarter dollar has been one of United States Mint's most popular collectibles. The individually designed coins of the 50 State Quarters Program ( 1999 - 2008 ) were followed by quarters for the District of Columbia and U.S. territories ( 2009 ). Congress authorized a new series of quarter dollars for 2010 thru 2021. The coins in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program honor significant sites from each of the fifty states, the five U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. Collectors have nicknamed the coins " National Park Quarters," but in addition to national parks they commemorate other natural sites such as forests, riverways and wilderness areas, and historical sites such as shrines, memorials, monuments, and military parks." - Whitman Publishing
