"The United States' first type of five-cent nickel coin, the Shield nickel, was minted for nearly 20 years, starting in 1866. By the early 1880s it was time for a change, and in 1883 a new design debuted. The new coin was designed by Charles E. Barber, chief engraver of the U.S. Mint. On the front of the coin Barber used a profile portrait of Miss Liberty wearing a diadem ( an ornamental headband similar to a small crown placed over the forehead ). On the reverse he put a large Roman numeral V ( for "five" ) in a wreath." - Whitman Publishing
