"Gold coins that circulated in the United States include gold dollars, quarter eagles ( $2.50 ), three-dollar pieces, half eagles ( $5.00 ), eagles ( $10.00 ), and double eagles ( $20.00 ). Over the years, the U.S. Mint has also struck various pattern coins in gold. ( Such coins [including the four-dollar gold pieces of 1879 and 1880, called Stellas] were not meant for circulation, but were struck to test new metallic compositions, die designs, planchet sizes, or other experimental factors. ) James Barton Longacre designed all three types of the gold dollars, as well as the three-dollar gold piece. The gold dollars of 1849 to 1854 feature a Liberty head design; those of 1854 to 1856 an indian Princess Head; and a third type, of 1856 to 1889, has a larger Indian Princess Head. The three-dollar gold coin also features the Indian Princess Head design. All of these coins bear their denomination and the date of issue within a wreath on the reverse.
