Truth is, though, unless you really, really, really want to, don't clean your coins; this will only lead to you reducing their value. If, however, you insist on cleaning them, here are a few tips.

Know How to Hold Your Coins

Coins are worth money because of the materials they are made of and their rareness. When you come across a coin that is rare, it is essential that you always hold it by the edges -- never the faces. Holding it by the face is likely to cause blemishes, thus reducing its value. For coins that are uncirculated -- in other words, they are worth a lot of money -- make sure to handle them with a pair of lintless gloves made out of cotton. It's best to avoid latex gloves because they tend to have lubricants on them, which can cause damage to your coins.

Cleaning Pennies

For copper coins -- especially pennies before 1982 -- ketchup will help clean them up. A small amount of ketchup and a toothbrush should bring back the beauty of almost any penny.If you notice the pennies are a pinkish color after cleaning them with ketchup, make a paste out of baking soda and water and rub it over the penny, followed by rinsing it with warm water. The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar sold in 2013 for $10,016,875 and is thought to be the first silver dollar minted by the United States.

Attribute:
The elements, like strike and luster, that make up a coin’s grade.

Blemishes:
Small marks, nicks, spots of discoloration and other imperfections that spoil the surface of a coin.

Brilliant:
A coin with full luster, which could contain extremely light toning at the most.

Burnishing:
The process of rubbing or polishing a coin to create a shiny appearance.

Condition:
The primary consideration when determining coin grade. The physical state of the coin. Condition of coins range from poor to mint state.

Luster:
The glossy brilliance of coins reflecting the light off the flow lines.

Mint State:
When a coin shows no signs of wear and is in perfect new condition. It is the finest quality possible and has no evidence of handling, scratches or contact with other coins.

Planchet:
The blank disk of metal before it is struck by a coining press, which transforms it into a coin.

Poor:
A coin grade with readable mint marks and date, but little more.

Pristine:
Term used to describe coins in original condition.

Series:
A particular motif or design used over a period of time.

Set:
A collection from a particular Mint, a collection of types or a collection in a series.

Strike:
Term signifying the act of minting coin or to indicate the presence of a coin’s intended detail or

Why Did Shipping Go Up?

Shipping is going up in 2015 and not by a little. There's always an annual increase from the carriers but both FedEx and UPS have made a major change to the way it will be calculated.

We have all known package shipping to be a charge for the weight of the package being shipped. If a box weighed one pound it was charged at a one pound rate. If it weight 10 pounds it was charged a 10 pound rate. The formula is pretty simple and made it possible for both sellers and consumers to determine shipping in advance.

This year there is a new formula that is called DIM weight, which is short for dimension weight. In a nutshell, DIM weight will charge the higher of the DIM weight formula or the actual package weight. What this means is that package weights will not necessarily be determined by the weight of the contents but will also include the size of the package.

The formula for DIM weight is (LxWxH)/166. To give you an example, 6x6x6 is 216 and that is divided by 166 to give a result of 1.30, which would round to 2. To put this another way, a 6" cube, which is not a very large package, has a minimum weight charge of 2 pounds. If the contents weight 15oz it will be rounded to 2 pounds but If the content weight is 3 pounds it would be charged at a 3 pound rate.

To help you understand why this is a major change we'll give you an example of one of our favorite box sizes: 6x9x12, which is a minimum weight of 4 pounds, regardless of the actual contents. This is calculated by: 6x9x12=648 and that becomes 648/166=3.9, which rounds to 4 pounds. Six 2x2x9 chipboard storage boxes might weigh about 2 pounds but they will have to ship at the 4 pound rate.

What this means for you as a consumer is that shipping rates are going up. Businesses are now having to guess at the cost of this change and those costs will be passed on in the form of higher prices and higher shipping rates. It will be universal.

Choosing a box for coin capsules can be confusing. The are so many different sized coins and matching capsules to go with them. And, just to make things really fun, capsules are labeled with sizes likes A, T, H & I or S, M, L & X. So, how do you know which capsule and corresponding box you need for your collection?

Model Columns
These boxes are designed for use with two primary coin capsule manufacturers. There are FOUR different capsule sizes. The model columns specify how each manufacturer designates their capsule sizes so you can choose the correct box. For example, if you have your coin in an Air-Tite A capsule you will need a box that holds size A. If your coin is in a Guardhouse L capsule you'll need a box that holds size L. The two brands are interchangeable; meaning Air-Tite T is the same size as Guardhouse M.

There are two different types of coin holders: Direct Fit & Ring Fit

Direct Fit Coin Sizes
Direct Fit coin capsules hold a specific size coin. Although the outside diameter is the same for all Air-Tite A or Guardhouse S capsules, the inside of direct fit capsules are molded to hold a specific coin. You cannot put a quarter into a dime capsule.

Ring Fit Coin Sizes
Ring fit holders will accommodate a variety of coin sizes depending on the rings being used. It is important for you to recognize that there is a difference between the coins held by direct fit holders and ring fit holders. A quarter, for example, fits into an A / Small direct fit capsule or into a T ring fit capsule. Similarly, a silver dollar fits into a H / Large direct fit capsule or I ring fit capsule.

Outside Diameter
There are only FOUR different outside diameter capsule sizes. Regardless of which coin you are putting in your box the most important question for you to answer is which coin capsule it will go in. Boxes are designed for THE COIN CAPSULE.

To properly select a box:

Determine what coin(s) will be in it.
Choose the correct capsule for you coin based on whether you are using a ring fit capsule or direct fit capsule.
Choose the box designed to hold that capsule.

Example:

Quarter
Ring Fit = size T capsule (note that if you had chosen a direct fit capsule you'd need a size A. Since we are choosing a ring fit you'll need a 24mm ring, which goes in a size T capsule)
