"A new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was introduced on all Canadian coins in 1965. It depicts her as she approached the age of 40, wearing a jeweled tiara. In keeping with the native-wildlife theme of the Confederation Centennial coinage series, the reverse of the 1967 five-cent coin depicts a running snowshoe rabbit and dual dates. The rising price of nickel in the late 1970s caused Canada to recompose the metallic content of its five-cent coin beginning in 1982 to 75% copper, 25% nickel, the same composition as the U.S. nickel." - Whitman Publishing
